First off, I have no experience with tuners or getting tunes or anything like that. Anyway, after searching the forums, the most common and well reviewed tuner was probably the SCT X3. I found one on Kijiji in my area for a decent price but have not purchased it yet. I wanna get some more info before purchasing so I know exactly what to expect.
Before we do anything, will the SCT X3 3000 even work with my 2011 Ranger 4X4 Sport 4.0L? Or should I go with another one?

What I've learned from the forums - After getting the actual tuner I will need to get 'tunes' in order to load them up on to the tuner. One of the most common places I've heard of when it comes to tunes is LaSota, specifically dealing with Don, or Fred from Rogue Performance, and from my understanding he emails you these 'tunes' according to your own specs, that you then load up onto the tuner yourself.

What I do not understand - Will it work with my MacBook? Will I need any kind of additional programs or anything for my Mac? Is it hard to use/load up tunes or is it a simple plug in and load? How much $$ are these 'tunes'?
I.e) What is the actual process of (i) getting 'tunes', (ii) loading tuner, and (iii) programming my truck with these tunes?
Also, why the ef isn't there a computer program that I could download onto my Mac and get a cable that will hook up the Mac to the Ranger and tune stuff through the mac to the car? I mean this would effectively eliminate the need for a tuner of any kind.. Or does that exist already but is bad or expensive or really hard to operate for the avg person? And why do I need to pay someone for these tunes? Is there no way to download them? Or use someone else's tuner but get the 'custom' tunes or whatever from Don?

If you installed the SCT device updater before you plugged the device in then this should be easy to fix.
With your device connected:
Open your computers Device Manager.
Look for a device that is not installed like one with a yellow exclamation mark. (Here is a screenshot of what you are looking for.)
If you see this, right click it and select update driver.
A new window should open up and give you the option to either automatically search, or browse for files.
Click browse for files
Navigate to the folder you downloaded, and select “Open”.
If you did this correctly, it’ll tell you your drivers have successfully been updated and once you click “OK” you should see something similar to the picture below.
Now your communication should work between the device and the computer. With most devices, you will want to unplug it and plug it back in and restart the device updater. Then click “Display Device Settings and Serial” and if the serial number shows up, it is communicating.
